Swiss SIG 57 leather bayonet frog, designed to carry the bayonet issued with the Swiss SIG SG 510 assault rifle, commonly designated the Stgw 57 in Swiss military service. Introduced in the late 1950s, the Stgw 57 became the standard Swiss service rifle and was accompanied by purpose-designed equipment and accoutrements.
The frog is constructed from leather and intended to secure the bayonet to the soldier’s belt or associated web equipment. Its form reflects the practical requirements of Swiss military load-bearing equipment during the Cold War period. It is of interest to collectors of Swiss military equipment, SIG 57 bayonets and twentieth-century European military accoutrements.
