Manufactured in silver, this original “Tirah 1897–98” clasp was awarded to officers and men of the British Army, Indian Army, and associated forces who took part in the Tirah Expedition of 1897–1898. The clasp was fitted to the ribbon of the India Medal 1895, recognising participation in one of the most significant and demanding frontier campaigns of the late Victorian period.
The Tirah Expedition was launched following the outbreak of widespread unrest among tribal groups on the North West Frontier, particularly involving the Afridi and Orakzai peoples. British and Indian forces were deployed under the command of William Lockhart to conduct operations in the remote Tirah Valley, an area of rugged mountains and difficult terrain in present-day Pakistan.
The campaign involved some of the most challenging fighting experienced by the Victorian Army, with troops operating at high altitude, often in severe weather conditions and against determined opposition. Major engagements included actions at Dargai Heights, where the famous advance of the Gordon Highlanders and other units secured a strategically important position, as well as operations against fortified tribal villages throughout the region.
The Tirah 1897–98 clasp was awarded to a wide range of British and Indian units, including infantry, cavalry, artillery, engineers, and support services. Many veterans of the campaign had already experienced earlier frontier operations, reflecting the continuous military commitment required to maintain British influence along the North West Frontier.
Original India Medal 1895 clasps are highly sought after by collectors of Victorian campaign medals and British Indian Army history. The Tirah 1897–98 clasp is particularly desirable due to its association with one of the most famous frontier expeditions of the nineteenth century and its connection with numerous distinguished regiments.
Manufactured in silver and retaining its original construction, this example represents an authentic and collectable piece of late Victorian military history.
