The United States-China War Memorial Medal, officially known as the Medal in Commemoration of Victory in the Resistance Against Aggression, a Second World War commemorative award established by the Republic of China in 1944 and first issued in 1946. The medal recognised military and civilian personnel who assisted the Chinese resistance against Japanese aggression during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Eligible recipients included Chinese personnel and foreign servicemen who supported the Chinese war effort, including members of the United States Army Air Forces serving in the China-Burma-India theatre. Veterans of the US Fourteenth Air Force, known for its association with the Flying Tigers, were among those subsequently presented with the award.
The obverse depicts the Marco Polo Bridge, a landmark associated with the outbreak of full-scale hostilities between China and Japan in July 1937. Above the bridge are crossed flags of the Republic of China and its armed forces, with a portrait of Chiang Kai-shek positioned between them. The background includes a cityscape symbolising the restoration of peaceful civilian life following the conflict. The reverse incorporates a raised rectangular panel intended for the recipient’s name or identifying number, surrounded by Chinese characters relating to the award. The ribbon features a central yellow band bordered by blue stripes and red outer edges, with a circular Chinese sun emblem at the centre. This medal is of interest to collectors of Chinese military decorations, Second World War Allied awards and China-Burma-India theatre memorabilia.
