United States Philippine Independence Medal, a commemorative medal associated with the independence of the Republic of the Philippines on 4 July 1946, following nearly five decades of American administration and the Japanese occupation during the Second World War. The award was initially established as the Philippine Independence Ribbon by the Commonwealth of the Philippines in 1946. A full-size medal was subsequently produced for the Philippine Government, with the design commemorating the formal transfer of sovereignty and the establishment of an independent Philippine republic. The ribbon was authorised for eligible United States military personnel who qualified for both the Philippine Defense and Philippine Liberation awards, or under the original criteria for personnel present on duty in the Philippines on Independence Day.
The circular, bronze-coloured medal features a female allegorical figure dressed in traditional Filipino clothing and holding the Philippine flag. Flags appear on either side of the central figure, surrounded by a raised circular border bearing the inscription “PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE” and the date “JULY 4, 1946”. The reverse carries the inscription “GRANTED PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE BY THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, commemorating the transfer of sovereignty. The ribbon uses colours derived from the Philippine flag, with a blue field, a central white stripe bordered by red stripes, and narrow yellow stripes at the edges. This medal is of interest to collectors of Philippine independence memorabilia, American military-related awards and Second World War-era historical decorations.
