United States Western Union bronze uniform button (pre-1930 pattern), 29mm, original example of American corporate uniform insignia associated with Western Union.

Manufactured in bronze, this 29mm uniform button was worn by employees of Western Union during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Featuring the company’s initials “WU”, buttons of this type formed part of the smart uniforms issued to telegraph operators, messengers, station agents, and other personnel who represented one of America’s most recognisable communications companies.

Founded in 1851, Western Union became the dominant telegraph company in the United States, developing an extensive network that revolutionised long-distance communication. By the late nineteenth century, the company operated hundreds of thousands of miles of telegraph wire, transmitting commercial messages, personal correspondence, government communications, and press reports across North America. Its services played a vital role in the expansion of business, railroads, finance, and news reporting during the industrial age.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, uniformed Western Union employees became a familiar sight throughout the United States. Messenger boys, telegraph operators, and office staff wore company-issued uniforms bearing distinctive bronze buttons such as this example, reflecting the company’s emphasis on professionalism and public recognition. These uniforms remained in use until changing corporate styles gradually replaced traditional dress during the early twentieth century.

Pre-1930 Western Union uniform buttons are increasingly sought after by collectors of telecommunications history, transportation memorabilia, and corporate uniform insignia. They represent an important period in the development of modern communications, when the telegraph connected communities across vast distances long before the widespread adoption of the telephone.

Manufactured in bronze and retaining its original shank fitting to the reverse, this example represents an authentic and collectable piece of early American communications history.
