United States Coast Guard Expert Pistol Shot Medal, an American military marksmanship award recognising United States Coast Guard and Coast Guard Reserve personnel who achieve expert qualification with the service pistol during an approved firearms qualification course. The medal was first issued in 1969 and forms part of the Coast Guard’s weapons proficiency award system. Qualification is determined by achieving the required score on a prescribed course of fire, making this a marksmanship award rather than a campaign or long-service medal.
The medal features a shield-shaped pendant bearing crossed pistols and a target, with the inscription “U.S. COAST GUARD EXPERT”. The design identifies the recipient’s achievement in pistol marksmanship and distinguishes the award from other United States military qualification medals. It is suspended from a dark blue ribbon with narrow white stripes near the edges. A corresponding pistol marksmanship ribbon is worn when the full medal is not displayed. The medal is of interest to collectors of United States Coast Guard decorations, American military marksmanship awards and modern service medals.
