This button features the standardised general service device in clear relief, incorporating a Victoria-crowned royal arms, all produced in brass consistent with British Army uniform fittings of the period.
General service buttons were issued for wear by personnel not assigned to a specific regiment or when standardised dress was required across multiple units. The crown and royal arms motif reflects service under Queen Victoria, placing this example firmly within the Victorian era. Such buttons were widely used across a range of uniforms, including service dress and working attire, providing a universal symbol of military authority.
Manufactured in brass with a loop shank fitting to the reverse, this example provides a representative piece of nineteenth-century British military insignia. Victorian General Service buttons are collected as examples of broad-issue military uniform components, British Army history, and period insignia.
