Vimiera clasp face for the Military General Service (MGS) Medal, produced as a contemporary tailor’s copy. The clasp commemorates the Battle of Vimiera, fought in Portugal on 21 August 1808 during the Peninsular War, when British and allied forces defeated the French army under General Junot.
The MGS Medal was introduced in 1847 to recognise British Army service during the Napoleonic Wars, with individual clasps denoting the qualifying actions and campaigns in which the recipient served. Vimiera is one of the recognised battle clasps associated with service during the Peninsular War.
This example is a contemporary tailor’s copy rather than a modern reproduction. Such period-made copies and replacement components are of interest to collectors of Napoleonic campaign medals, Military General Service Medals, Peninsular War awards and British military medal collecting. As a clasp face rather than a complete medal clasp, it is particularly suitable for collectors studying the construction and manufacture of nineteenth-century campaign medal components.
Condition
