Women’s Transport Service, First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY) cap badge, restrike example of the distinctive circular badge associated with the women’s wartime transport organisation. The badge features a prominent Maltese-style cross within a circular surround bearing the wording “FANY”, with “WOMEN’S TRANSPORT SERVICE” across the upper and lower portions of the design. The First Aid Nursing Yeomanry was established in 1907 as a women’s voluntary organisation and developed into a specialist service providing transport, communications, nursing and other support during wartime. During the Second World War, members served in a variety of important roles, including driving and transporting personnel and supplies. The Women’s Transport Service became particularly associated with the FANY name and its distinctive insignia.
