An original and scarce example of the Army Pay Corps (APC) cap badge, worn during the earliest years of the corps’ formal establishment, circa 1898–1900.
Struck in brass, this early short-lived pattern features the intertwined initials “APC” in ornate script lettering, surmounted by Queen Victoria’s crown. The reverse is fitted with the original east–west copper lugs, correct for the period and consistent with late 19th-century manufacture.
This badge was worn following the formal creation of the Army Pay Corps in 1893, after a redesign in 1900 to include the Victorian crown, and before the coronation of Edward VII in 1901. These early badges are particularly sought-after due to their short issue period, ornate design, and direct link to the expanding administrative and financial structure of the British Army during the late Victorian era.
