Auxiliary Territorial Service officer service dress cap badge in bronze, produced in the pattern worn from 1938 to 1949 by commissioned officers of the Auxiliary Territorial Service of the British Army. This Second World War British women’s service officer’s cap badge displays the recognised ATS device in clear relief, incorporating the letters “ATS” in voided block serif capitals within a laurel wreath tied at the base, surmounted by a King’s Crown at the topmost point, the whole struck as a single-piece construction in bronze. The bronze finish and blade reverse fittings distinguish the officer’s pattern from the other ranks’ badge, which was produced in brass with a slider reverse – the use of bronze for officers’ patterns being a convention applied across several British Army corps and service badges of the Second World War period to provide a visible material distinction between officer and other ranks’ versions of the same device without altering the design itself. The King’s Crown dates this example precisely to the period from the ATS’s formation in September 1938 until its disbandment in February 1949, making this a badge exclusive to the organisation’s entire existence.

The Auxiliary Territorial Service was formed on 9 September 1938 as the women’s branch of the British Army, initially as a voluntary service drawing women to fill support roles vacated by men required for combat arms. The first recruits served as cooks, clerks, drivers, and storekeepers, but the range of roles expanded substantially as the war progressed. ATS members served as telephonists, postal workers, ammunition inspectors, radar operators, and members of the crews of anti-aircraft and searchlight batteries under Anti-Aircraft Command — in the latter role becoming the closest British women came to direct combat participation during the conflict, operating the height-finders, predictors, and fire control instruments of heavy and light anti-aircraft guns, though regulations prohibited them from firing the weapons themselves. By VE Day in May 1945, the ATS numbered over 190,000 members, making it the largest women’s service in the British armed forces. Notable ATS members included Princess Elizabeth — later Queen Elizabeth II — who trained as a driver and light vehicle mechanic at No. 1 Mechanical Transport Training Centre at Camberley in early 1945, and Mary Churchill, youngest daughter of the Prime Minister, who served in mixed anti-aircraft batteries. The ATS was disbanded on 1 February 1949, when it was amalgamated into the newly formed Women’s Royal Army Corps, at which point a new badge was adopted and the ATS badge ceased to be worn.

Manufactured in bronze consistent with British Army women’s service officers’ cap badge production of the 1938 to 1949 period, this original example provides a well-defined representation of the ATS officer’s service dress cap badge as worn throughout the Second World War and the immediate post-war period. ATS officer’s bronze cap badges are collected as examples of Second World War British women’s service militaria, officer’s headdress insignia of the Auxiliary Territorial Service, and uniform hardware associated with the largest women’s military organisation in British history.
