An original example of the German War Merit Cross 1st Class with Swords (Kriegsverdienstkreuz 1. Klasse mit Schwertern), complete with its original presentation case. This decoration was instituted in October 1939 and awarded for exceptional service to the war effort that did not meet the requirements for the Iron Cross, particularly for acts of bravery and outstanding non-combatant contributions not necessarily on the frontline.
Struck in silvered Kriegsmetal (War Metal, a zinc alloy), this example retains a small amount of its original frosted finish and sharp detailing. The reverse features a vertical pin, hinge, and catch assembly, marked “L18” (B. H. Mayer’s Hofkunst-Prägeanstalt, Pforzheim).
Housed in its later wartime issue original black leatherette cardboard case, with a satin-lined lid and flocked interior fitted for display. The lid bears the silver cross outline.
Condition: Good, retaining some of its original silvering and sharp relief. The case is relatively worn, with the tape on the hinge split, but still held onto the base by the satin lining
Dimensions:
Cross: approx. 49mm x 49mm
Case: approx. 69mm x 68mm x 20mm
