South African Natal Mounted Rifles (NMR) uniform button of the pattern worn from 1922 through to approximately 1961, associated with this historic South African regiment. This 25mm button features the distinctive “NMR” cypher in flowing script beneath a crown, all executed in a bright chrome finish and set against a smooth, domed field typical of mid-twentieth century military buttons.
The crowned “NMR” monogram represents the Natal Mounted Rifles, one of South Africa’s oldest volunteer regiments, with origins dating back to the colonial era. The crown denotes service under the British Crown during the period before South Africa transitioned to a republic in 1961. Buttons of this type formed part of service dress and formal uniforms, reflecting regimental identity in a refined and understated manner.
Manufactured in chrome-plated metal with a loop shank fitting to the reverse, this example provides a well-defined representation of South African military insignia from the early to mid-twentieth century. Natal Mounted Rifles buttons are collected as examples of Commonwealth militaria, South African regimental insignia, and military uniform components.
