South African Constabulary uniform button of the 1901-1908 pattern, associated with the Boer War and the period immediately afterwards. This 25mm button features the service’s recognised device in clear relief, incorporating the King’s crown with a lion standing on a snake and scroll beneath reading the title “South African Constabulary”, all executed in gilt consistent with officers’ quality uniform buttons.
The crown motif reflects governance under the British Crown before later administrative changes in South Africa. At the same time, the overall design follows traditional Southern African motifs. Buttons of this type were worn by the South African Constabulary as part of formal and service dress, providing clear identification of departmental affiliation.
Manufactured in gilt metal with a loop shank fitting to the reverse, this example provides a representative piece of early South African institutional insignia. South African Constabulary buttons are collected as examples of colonial-era memorabilia, law enforcement and military service insignia, and historical uniform components.
