Central South African Railways (CSAR) uniform button of the 1902–1910 pattern, associated with the British-administered railway system established following the Second Boer War. This 21mm button features the organisation’s recognised device in crisp relief, incorporating the Royal Arms with surrounding legend bearing the railway title “Central South African Railway”, all executed in white metal consistent with early twentieth-century railway uniform fittings.
The Central South African Railways operated in the Transvaal and Orange River Colony under British control between 1902 and 1910, playing a vital role in post-war reconstruction, administration, and economic development. The crown motif reflects imperial authority during this period, while the overall design follows established British railway uniform traditions. Buttons of this type were worn by railway staff and officials as part of formal dress, signifying their role within the colonial transport system.
Manufactured in white metal with a loop shank fitting to the reverse, this example provides a well-defined representation of early twentieth-century colonial railway insignia. CSAR buttons are collected as examples of railway history, colonial administration memorabilia, and British Empire transport heritage.
Condition
Very good overall condition with clear detailing and a well-preserved surface. Minor signs of age-related wear and use may be present. Shank to the reverse remains intact and secure. No significant damage or repairs are evident.
