South African Volunteer Composite Regiment (Natal) uniform button, 19.5mm size, of the pattern worn during the Anglo-Boer War period (1901–1902). This button features the regiment’s recognised device in clear relief, incorporating a crowned monogram and title “Natal” below, all set within a bordered field and executed in white metal consistent with early twentieth-century military uniform fittings.
The Volunteer Composite Regiment (Natal) was formed from various colonial volunteer units in the Colony of Natal during the Second Boer War, serving in support roles and local defence operations. The crowned design reflects allegiance to the British Crown, while the unit’s composite nature brought together personnel from multiple volunteer formations within the region. Buttons of this type were worn on service and dress uniforms, denoting unit identity during this period of conflict.
Manufactured in white metal with a loop shank fitting to the reverse, this example provides a well-defined representation of South African colonial military insignia. Buttons of the Volunteer Composite Regiment are collected as examples of Boer War militaria, colonial volunteer forces, and British Empire uniform components.
