Royal West African Frontier Force (RWAFF) uniform horn button, 17mm size, of the pattern worn between 1928 and 1960 by personnel of this British colonial military force. This button features the regiment’s recognised device in relief, incorporating a palm tree with “RWAFF” initials below, moulded in dark horn material and finished in a stripled, slightly domed profile characteristic of natural material buttons.
The RWAFF was composed of units raised across British West Africa, including Nigeria, the Gold Coast, Sierra Leone, and the Gambia, serving in both the First and Second World Wars as well as in regional operations. The crown motif reflects service under the British Crown during the colonial period, while the use of horn construction was both practical and economical, particularly suited to tropical climates and field service conditions. Buttons of this type were worn on service dress and working uniforms, providing durable and functional insignia.
Manufactured in natural horn with an integral or attached shank fitting, this example provides a representative piece of colonial-era military uniform hardware. RWAFF buttons are collected as examples of British Empire militaria, African military history, and utilitarian uniform components.
