An authentic example of a 19th-century Sudanese Kaskara sword, characteristic of the traditional edged weapons carried across Sudan and the broader Sahel region. This piece exemplifies local craftsmanship influenced by earlier Arab and Crusader-era sword forms, featuring a straight, double-edged blade. Made from repurposed trade steel found locally, the blade has a shallow groove that runs from the base and narrows to a rounded tip, making it good for slicing and stabbing. It also features a Mediaeval European-style crossguard and leather-bound hilt.
Dimensions
Overall length: approx. 101.5cm (31.25 in)
Blade length: approx. 88cm (34.5 in)
Blade width at forte: approx. 4.5cm (1.75 in)
Condition
Good. The blade shows a fairly even-aged patina with light pitting and some damage to the edges. Little remains of the leather hilt, with the pommel missing.
