The Model F pattern formed part of the standardisation of British East India Company socket bayonets during the early Victorian era, with variations produced for different musket configurations and bore sizes.

The blade is marked by the maker “S. Hill”, one of the Birmingham and Sheffield trade manufacturers supplying edged weapons and military equipment to the British government during the 19th century. Bayonets of this type were produced for service during a period marked by imperial expansion and military modernisation under the reign of Queen Victoria.

Socket bayonets of the 1839 pattern were intended for close combat and infantry drill, reflecting the tactical requirements of smoothbore musket warfare before the introduction of later rifle-musket systems.
