French Third Republic Médaille Militaire (1870–1940), an original French military decoration associated with the armed forces of France during the period of the French Third Republic. The Médaille Militaire is one of France’s most distinguished military awards and was granted for acts of bravery, long and meritorious service, or exceptional military conduct.
The decoration features the circular silver laurel wreath medal design suspended from a laurel wreath and topped by a trophy-of-arms suspension. The obverse bears the left profile of Marianne, effigy of the French Republic, together with the inscription “République Française / 1870″, while the reverse carries the wording “Valeur et Discipline” (“Valour and Discipline”). The medal is suspended from the distinctive yellow ribbon with green edge stripes characteristic of the award.
Instituted originally in 1852, the Médaille Militaire continued in use throughout the Third Republic and was awarded extensively during major conflicts, including the First World War. Examples from the Third Republic period remain highly collectable for their association with French military history and the major conflicts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Manufactured in gilt and silvered metal with enamel with original suspension and ribbon, this example represents a classic piece of French military decoration and honours history.
