The decoration features a gilt starburst badge with a central medallion bearing a lion and the order’s title “Order of British”, surrounded by a blue enamel ring inscribed “Order of British India”. The First Class grade was the senior division of the order, awarded for long, faithful, and meritorious service by Indian officers of the British Indian Army.
Instituted in 1837, the Order of British India recognised distinguished service by native officers (Viceroy’s commissioned officers) who had demonstrated exceptional devotion and leadership. The First Class grade conferred the title “Sardar Bahadur” and was typically awarded to senior Indian officers such as Subedars and Risaldars with long service records.
The 1939–1947 pattern reflects the final years of the order under British rule in India, spanning the reign of George VI and the period leading up to Indian independence in 1947. It remains a significant piece of colonial military history, closely associated with the structure of the British Indian Army and its indigenous officer corps.
Manufactured in solid 22 or 18 carat gold and enamel with original suspension and ribbon, this example represents a highly important and historically significant piece of British Indian honours system insignia.
