Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) cap badge (1938–1949 pattern), original example of British military headdress insignia associated with the Auxiliary Territorial Service, the women’s branch of the British Army during the Second World War.

The badge features the distinctive ATS insignia in relief, incorporating the corps initials and crowned wreath associated with the service. Designed for wear on military headwear, the badge served as a visible symbol of membership in one of Britain’s most important wartime military organisations for women.

Cap badges of this type were worn by officers and other ranks of the Auxiliary Territorial Service, serving as a clear indication of corps affiliation. Established in 1938, the ATS expanded rapidly during World War II, with its members undertaking a wide variety of essential duties, including administration, communications, radar operation, anti-aircraft support, vehicle maintenance, driving, and clerical work.

The contribution of the ATS was vital to the British war effort, enabling large numbers of male personnel to be released for frontline service. By the end of the war, the organisation had become one of the largest women’s services in British military history. In 1949, the ATS was succeeded by the Women’s Royal Army Corps, making ATS insignia a significant reminder of Britain’s wartime military heritage.

Manufactured in brass with original attachment fittings to the reverse, this example represents an authentic and highly collectable piece of British women’s military history.
