Private Hugh Ashcroft, Durham Light Infantry (DLI)
Hugh Ashcroft was born in 1896 in Witton Park, Durham. He lived in Houghton-le-Spring, Durham and worked as a colliery labourer above ground before enlisting.
He began service in France on the 30th of October, 1915, and initially served in the 1/8th Durham Light Infantry, later moving to the 22nd DLI and having his service number changed to “300916” (or “300917” on his pension card). He then transferred to the Northumberland Fusiliers (service number “80498”) and later to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (service number “4438295”).
After the war, he re-enlisted to the 8th DLI (TF) on the 5th of July, 1920
