Durham Light Infantry (Bugle / DURHAM) white metal shoulder title (1952–1958 pattern), original example of British Army regimental insignia associated with the Durham Light Infantry.
The shoulder title is manufactured in white metal and features the regiment’s distinctive bugle horn surmounted above the word “DURHAM”, reflecting the traditions of Britain’s light infantry regiments. Worn on the shoulder straps of service dress uniforms, it provided a clear indication of regimental identity while maintaining the elegant and practical appearance of post-war British Army dress.
This Queen Elizabeth II era pattern was worn between 1952 and 1958, during the early years of the reign of Elizabeth II. It represents one of the final distinctive shoulder titles issued to the Durham Light Infantry before changes to British Army dress regulations led to the gradual discontinuation of many traditional shoulder titles.
The Durham Light Infantry was formed in 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms through the amalgamation of the 68th (Durham) Regiment of Foot (Light Infantry) and the 106th Regiment of Foot (Bombay Light Infantry). The regiment earned an outstanding reputation for discipline and service, taking part in campaigns including the Second Boer War, the First World War, and World War II. In 1968, it amalgamated with the Light Infantry, the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, and the Somerset and Cornwall Light Infantry to form The Light Infantry.
Original Durham Light Infantry shoulder titles are increasingly sought after by collectors, particularly examples from the short-lived 1952–1958 pattern, which represent the regiment during its final years as an independent infantry regiment.
Manufactured in white metal with original attachment fittings to the reverse, this example represents an attractive and collectable piece of post-war British military insignia.
