King’s Own Scottish Borderers (KOSB) officer’s gilt button, 19mm, an original example of British Army regimental uniform insignia associated with the King’s Own Scottish Borderers.
Manufactured in gilt metal to officer quality, this 19mm uniform button bears the distinctive regimental device of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers and was worn on officers’ service dress, mess dress, and ceremonial uniforms. Officer-quality buttons were privately purchased and produced to a superior standard, featuring finely struck detailing and a rich gilt finish.
The King’s Own Scottish Borderers traced its origins to 1689, when the regiment was raised as The Earl of Leven’s Regiment in response to the political and military upheavals surrounding the Glorious Revolution. It later became the 25th Regiment of Foot and, following the Childers Reforms of 1881, was redesignated as the King’s Own Scottish Borderers, recruiting from the Scottish Borders and surrounding counties.
Throughout its long history, the regiment served with distinction across the British Empire, including during the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimean War, the Second Boer War, the First World War, and World War II. During the twentieth century, KOSB battalions fought on the Western Front, in North Africa, Italy, Burma, Korea, and numerous post-war deployments.
The regiment maintained a proud identity as a Scottish Border infantry unit until 2006, when it was amalgamated with other Scottish infantry regiments to form the Royal Regiment of Scotland. Its traditions are now preserved within the regiment’s battalions and affiliated organisations.
Original officer-quality KOSB buttons are highly regarded by collectors of Scottish military insignia due to their craftsmanship, regimental significance, and association with one of Scotland’s oldest infantry traditions.
Manufactured in gilt metal and retaining its original reverse shank fitting, this example represents an authentic and collectable piece of Scottish regimental history.
