Sapper Sidney Vaughan Slade, Royal Engineers (Silver War Badge Recipient)
Sidney Vaughan Slade was born in Lichfield, Staffordshire, on the 2nd of July, 1882. He lived in Ludlow, Shropshire, and worked as a stonemason for several years in Peterborough.
He enlisted on the 31st of August, 1915, and began service in France on the 20th of December, 1915, in the 157th Field Company, Royal Engineers. He sustained a gunshot wound to his left hand, noted as “severe”, on the 8th of April 1917, and remained in hospital for 80 days, being discharged from the hospital as well as from service on the 4th of July 1917. He was issued the Silver War Badge (number 206288).
He went on to marry Annie Henson in December 1917 and worked in a chemist’s shop after the war. He died on the 14th of May, 1962, aged 79
