Jowaki 1877–8 clasp, original example of the campaign bar awarded with the India General Service Medal (1854) for service during the Jowaki Expedition on the North West Frontier of British India.

Manufactured in silver, this original “Jowaki 1877–8” clasp was awarded to officers and men of the British Army and Indian Army who took part in the Jowaki Expedition of 1877–1878. The clasp was fitted to the ribbon of the India General Service Medal (1854), recognising service during one of the notable frontier campaigns of the late Victorian period.

The expedition was undertaken against the Jowaki Afridis, a Pashtun tribal group occupying the rugged mountainous country around the Kohat Pass on the North West Frontier. Following attacks on British interests and disputes over control of the frontier routes, British and Indian forces launched operations to bring the area under control and secure communications through this strategically important region.

The campaign was conducted in difficult conditions, with troops operating through steep mountain terrain, narrow passes, and fortified tribal positions. British and Indian units faced determined resistance and the logistical challenges associated with frontier warfare, requiring careful coordination between infantry, cavalry, artillery, and supporting services.

The Jowaki 1877–8 clasp is one of the desirable early frontier clasps from the India General Service Medal (1854) series. It represents the frequent military expeditions undertaken along the North West Frontier during the Victorian era and highlights the important role of the British and Indian Armies in maintaining control of Britain’s Indian territories.

Original clasps from the India General Service Medal (1854) series are highly sought after by collectors of Victorian campaign medals and British Empire militaria. Individual clasps are particularly desirable for medal restoration projects, specialist collections, and displays illustrating the extensive military history of nineteenth-century India.

Manufactured in silver and retaining its original construction, this example represents an authentic and collectable piece of Victorian campaign medal history.
