Suakin 1885 clasp – contemporary tailor’s copy, period-made example of the campaign clasp awarded with the Egypt Medal (1882–1889) for service during the Suakin Expedition of 1885.

This contemporary tailor’s copy faithfully reproduces the “Suakin 1885” clasp, one of the campaign bars awarded to recipients of the Egypt Medal for participation in operations around the Red Sea port of Suakin during 1885. Unlike modern reproductions, tailor’s copies were manufactured during or shortly after the Victorian period for wear on uniforms, display, or as privately purchased replacements when original medals or clasps were unavailable. These period-made copies are recognised by collectors as historic artefacts in their own right, reflecting nineteenth-century military outfitting practices.

The original Suakin 1885 clasp was authorised for officers and men of the British Army, Royal Marines, Royal Navy, and supporting colonial forces who served during the campaign to secure Suakin and protect the construction of the proposed Suakin–Berber railway. The expedition formed part of the wider Mahdist War, in which British and Egyptian forces sought to counter the expansion of Mahdist control in the Sudan following the death of Charles George Gordon at Khartoum.

Operations around Suakin were marked by difficult desert conditions and fierce engagements against Mahdist forces, including the Battles of Hashin and Tofrek. British troops, supported by naval brigades and Indian Army units, fought a series of actions to defend the port and secure lines of communication, although the railway project was ultimately abandoned.

Contemporary tailor’s copies were often produced to a high standard by military outfitters, closely replicating the appearance of officially issued clasps. While not officially issued by the Crown, these Victorian-period copies are increasingly sought after by collectors for their historical authenticity and their association with period military dress and medal mounting.

This example represents an attractive period-made copy of a notable Victorian campaign clasp and would make an excellent addition to a collection of British Empire campaign medals, Egypt Medal clasps, or nineteenth-century military memorabilia.
