An original British 1944 Pattern Webbing Map Case, manufactured during the Second World War for issue to British and Commonwealth forces. Constructed from heavy-duty olive drab webbing with a celluloid pocket, this practical field accessory was designed to protect and carry maps, documents, orders, and writing materials while on active service. Original wartime examples remain highly sought after by collectors of British Army equipment and Second World War militaria.

Introduced as part of the 1944 Pattern Web Equipment, the map case reflected the British Army’s continued development of personal field equipment during the latter stages of the Second World War. Designed for durability and ease of access, it features secure flap closure and internal compartments for organising maps and other essential documents required by officers, non-commissioned officers, signallers, reconnaissance personnel, artillery observers, and other troops responsible for navigation and battlefield communication.

The 1944 Pattern Web Equipment was intended to improve upon earlier webbing designs and saw service during the closing stages of the Second World War, remaining in British military use during the immediate post-war period and into the early years of the Cold War. Original examples are increasingly scarce, particularly those retaining clear wartime characteristics and exhibiting honest service wear.

This genuine WW2-era map case is an excellent addition to collections of British Army webbing, field equipment, airborne or infantry equipment, and Second World War military memorabilia. It is equally suitable for display, historical interpretation, or completing a wartime webbing set.

The internal dating seems to read either ‘1944’ or ‘1945’; however, it is nearly illegible.

Dimensions

Condition

Good original condition, with service wear and personal inscriptions consistent with military use. The webbing displays age-related wear, minor marks, and handling consistent with its period of service. Stitching and fittings remain sound, making this an attractive and increasingly collectable example of original 1944 Pattern British Army webbing.
