An original British Bren gun spare barrel bag, manufactured during the Korean War era for issue with the Bren light machine gun. Constructed from durable olive drab canvas webbing, this practical military accessory was designed to carry and protect the Bren gun’s spare barrel during operational service. Original Korean War-era examples remain highly collectable among enthusiasts of British military equipment, Cold War militaria, and Bren gun accessories.
Following the Second World War, the Bren light machine gun remained the British Army’s standard section light machine gun and saw extensive service during the Korean War (1950–1953). British and Commonwealth forces relied heavily upon the Bren’s renowned reliability, accuracy, and rugged construction while operating in the harsh mountainous terrain and extreme weather conditions of the Korean Peninsula. To ensure continuous fire during prolonged engagements, each Bren gun was issued with a quick-change spare barrel carried in a dedicated protective bag.
Manufactured from heavy-duty canvas with robust webbing fittings and a secure flap closure, the spare barrel bag was designed to protect the barrel from dirt, moisture, and damage whilst allowing rapid access when required. It could be attached to webbing equipment or carried independently, ensuring the spare barrel was always immediately available to the gun team.
Original Korean War-era Bren spare barrel bags continued the proven wartime design but were manufactured during the post-war period for continued British Army service. Many remained in use throughout the 1950s and beyond, seeing service with British and Commonwealth forces during the early Cold War.
This genuine Korean War-era example would make an excellent addition to any collection of British Army field equipment, Bren gun accessories, Korean War militaria, or Cold War British webbing. It is equally suitable for display, historical interpretation, or completing a post-war Bren gun equipment set.
