Punitive Expeditions clasp face – contemporary tailor’s copy, period-made replacement face plate for the British North Borneo Company’s Medal campaign clasp.

This contemporary tailor’s copy faithfully reproduces the front face of the “Punitive Expeditions” clasp issued with the British North Borneo Company’s Medal. Unlike modern reproductions, these period-made tailor’s copies were manufactured during or shortly after the Victorian period by military outfitters for wear on uniforms, replacement of damaged clasp components, or completion of privately mounted medal groups. Today, they are recognised by collectors as historic artefacts in their own right, reflecting nineteenth-century military tailoring and medal mounting practices.

The original Punitive Expeditions clasp was awarded to members of the British North Borneo Company’s military and police forces who participated in a series of punitive operations undertaken to suppress local uprisings and resistance within the Company’s territories in North Borneo during the late nineteenth century. These expeditions were carried out to enforce Company authority, protect settlements and trade routes, and restore order following attacks on government outposts or acts of rebellion.

Operations were typically conducted through dense tropical rainforest, rivers, and mountainous terrain, involving detachments of the North Borneo Armed Constabulary, local police, and Company forces supported by Royal Navy vessels when required. The campaigns formed part of the British North Borneo Company’s administration of its chartered territory before it became a British Crown Colony after the Second World War.

As this example is the clasp face only, it represents the engraved front plate that would originally have been fitted to the clasp body. Original clasp faces are considerably scarcer than complete clasps, having often been separated during repairs, alterations, or restoration work over many decades. They are particularly sought after by collectors undertaking sympathetic restoration of original Company medals or assembling specialist collections of campaign medal components.

The Punitive Expeditions clasp is one of the most unusual and desirable clasps associated with the British North Borneo Company’s Medal, appealing to collectors of British colonial campaigns, chartered company medals, and South-East Asian military history. Contemporary tailor’s copy clasp faces provide an excellent insight into period medal outfitting and the long collecting history associated with these scarce colonial awards.

This example would make an excellent addition to a collection of British North Borneo Company’s Medal components, colonial campaign medal restorations, or British Empire militaria.
