Sherwood Foresters (Derbyshire Regiment) officer’s uniform button, dating from the transitional period immediately before the regiment adopted the title “The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment)” in 1902. Formed in 1881 through the amalgamation of the 45th (Nottinghamshire) and 95th (Derbyshire) Regiments of Foot, the regiment retained a distinctive identity based on its association with Sherwood Forest and the county traditions of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Its uniform insignia reflected this heritage and was worn during the final years of the Victorian Army and the opening of the Edwardian period.
The button measures approximately 19mm in diameter and represents the officer’s pattern of Sherwood Foresters uniform insignia. The regiment’s heraldic identity incorporated the stag and foliage associated with Sherwood Forest, alongside its distinctive regimental title. The 1901–1902 date range makes this an interesting transitional example, preceding the formal adoption of the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire title. Officer’s buttons are particularly relevant to collections of British Army uniform accessories, county regiments and Sherwood Foresters militaria.
