Medallion commemorating the 500th Anniversary of Russian Artillery, issued in 1889 to mark five centuries since the establishment of artillery forces in Russia. This Imperial Russian commemorative medal reflects the late 19th-century tradition of producing official and semi-official medallions to celebrate significant military anniversaries.
The design on the obverse is of Alexander III, Tsar of Russia, with the embossed text reading “Alexander III, Emperor and Autocrat of all the Russias”, the reverse features various artillery cannons on a wreath and the text “1389–1889 In Memory of 500 Years of Russian Artillery”.
Struck in bronze, the medallion demonstrates clear relief detailing with period craftsmanship consistent with commemorative military awards of the reign of Tsar Alexander III. Medallions of this type are collected as examples of Imperial Russian militaria, 19th-century artillery history, and European commemorative medallic issues. The piece is usually plain-edged and without a suspension, being intended as a commemorative medallion rather than a wearable decoration.
