An original Imperial German S14 (Seitengewehr 1914) bayonet, an early First World War pattern bayonet produced at the outbreak of hostilities. Designed as a substitute for Gewehr-type rifles, such as the Mauser G98 and K98, when the German Army (Deutsches Heer) had shortages at the beginning of the First World War. Typical Mauser bayonet design with working press-catch pommel, straight fullered blade and plain wooden slab grips secured by 2 bolts.
Ricasso bears the maker mark “On” (Odeon-Werke, Berlin) and shows an inspection stamp on the spine. The blade form and pommel profile are consistent with the S14 type produced for early-war issue.
