Indian 1914-15 Star Medal, Sepoy Sher Khan, 82nd Punjabis

At the outbreak of the First World War, the 82nd Punjabis were serving on the North West Frontier of India. In January 1916, they were sent to Mesopotamia and supported British efforts to relieve the besieged garrison at Kut al Amara. They also fought in the Battle of Dujaila Redoubt in March 1916 and in the Battle of the Hai Salient in January 1917, then took part in the British advance towards Baghdad. In the fierce fighting at Shumran, while crossing the River Tigris, the regiment again suffered heavy casualties. After the capture of Baghdad, the 82nd Punjabis were put on guard duties, first at Baghdad, and later on the Persian frontier. When they returned home in 1919, they participated in the Third Afghan War.
