16th/5th The Queen’s Royal Lancers Officer Button, King’s Crown, 1901–1953 Pattern, a 24.5mm British cavalry officer’s uniform button associated with the 16th/5th The Queen’s Royal Lancers. The King’s Crown and 1901–1953 pattern place this button within the Edwardian and George V periods, extending through the First World War, interwar years and Second World War.
The 16th/5th The Queen’s Royal Lancers was formed in 1922 through the amalgamation of the 16th The Queen’s Lancers and 5th Royal Irish Lancers, bringing together the traditions of two historic British cavalry regiments. Both predecessor regiments had distinguished service histories, including campaigns during the nineteenth century and extensive service during the First World War. The regiment subsequently served during the Second World War, maintaining its cavalry identity before later conversion to an armoured role.
Officer buttons are of particular interest to collectors of British cavalry insignia, officer uniform, Lancer regimental buttons, First World War militaria and Royal Lancers history. The King’s Crown pattern is especially relevant to collections covering British Army uniform from the early twentieth century through the end of the reign of George VI.
