Essex Yeomanry brass button, 1909–1953 pattern, representing one of the county’s long-established Yeomanry cavalry units. The button dates from the Territorial Force era and covers the period of the First World War, interwar years and the Second World War, making it a useful example of British Yeomanry uniform insignia.

The Essex Yeomanry formed part of the Territorial Force from 1908 and served in cavalry and later armoured roles during the twentieth century. During the First World War, the regiment provided personnel for overseas service, while its later conversion to an armoured role reflected the wider mechanisation of Britain’s Yeomanry forces. The unit therefore has an important place in the military history of Essex and the development of the British Territorial Army.

This button is suitable for collectors of Essex Yeomanry, British cavalry buttons, Territorial Force insignia, Yeomanry militaria and First and Second World War uniform items. Its small 17mm size also makes it a useful addition to collections of British military buttons and county Yeomanry insignia.
