2nd (South Middlesex) Middlesex Rifle Volunteer Corps collar badge (1878–1908 pattern), original example of Victorian British volunteer force insignia associated with the 2nd (South Middlesex) Middlesex Rifle Volunteer Corps.

Collar badges of this pattern were worn in matched pairs by officers and other ranks between 1878 and 1908, serving as a visible symbol of unit identity. The Rifle Volunteer Corps differed from line infantry units by maintaining many distinctive customs, including rifle green uniforms, bugle-horn insignia, and an emphasis on marksmanship and light infantry tactics.

The 2nd (South Middlesex) Middlesex Rifle Volunteer Corps was one of many volunteer units raised following the volunteer movement of 1859, when concerns over national defence prompted the formation of locally raised rifle corps throughout Britain. Recruited primarily from the South Middlesex area of London, the corps formed part of the wider network of volunteer forces that provided a trained reserve for home defence while fostering strong local and civic identity.

Following the Haldane Reforms of 1908, the Rifle Volunteer Corps were absorbed into the newly established Territorial Force, bringing an end to the independent Volunteer Corps system. Consequently, badges from the pre-1908 Volunteer era are particularly sought after by collectors due to their historical significance and comparatively limited period of use.

Manufactured in bronzed brass with original attachment fittings to the reverse, this example represents an attractive and increasingly scarce piece of Victorian volunteer military insignia.
