Original British 1888 Pattern Mk. I, 2nd Type Lee-Metford bayonet, manufactured by Sanderson, Sheffield, and clearly dated September 1898. This pattern was the standard issue for the .303-inch Lee-Metford rifle, later also converted for use with early Lee-Enfield rifles, and remained in service through the Second Boer War and into the early 20th century.
This bayonet features a double-edged, spear-point blade and two brass rivets securing the wooden slab grips to the tang.
The ricasso is marked “9’98 / Sanderson Sheffield”, with clear government inspection and broad arrow stamps on both sides. The pommel bears a working press-stud and oil hole. Housed in its correct black leather scabbard with steel throat and chape.
