British East India Company 1839 Pattern Model F socket bayonet, manufactured by Stephen Hill, an original mid-19th-century British East India Company military edged weapon designed for use with percussion muzzle-loading muskets of the Victorian period. This pattern reflects the transitional era of British East India Company infantry equipment prior to the widespread adoption of rifled firearms.

The bayonet features a triangular-section blade with an offset socket incorporating a slot for the front sight and a slot for the “Hanoverian catch” system seen on the 1839 Pattern Percussion Musket. The Model F pattern formed part of the standardisation of British East India Company socket bayonets during the early Victorian era, with variations produced for different musket configurations and bore sizes.

The blade is marked by the maker “S. Hill”, one of the Birmingham and Sheffield trade manufacturers supplying edged weapons and military equipment to the British government during the 19th century. Bayonets of this type were produced for service during a period marked by imperial expansion and military modernisation under the reign of Queen Victoria.

Socket bayonets of the 1839 pattern were intended for close combat and infantry drill, reflecting the tactical requirements of smoothbore musket warfare before the introduction of later rifle-musket systems. Their robust construction and simple locking mechanism made them practical military sidearms for line infantry service.

Manufactured in steel with a fitted socket and locking ring, this example represents a well-defined piece of early Victorian British militaria suitable for collectors of antique arms and edged weapons.
