British Naval 2-Pounder No. I, Mk. II brass shell case, an original example of Royal Navy ordnance associated with the famous “Pom-Pom” quick-firing anti-aircraft gun used during the first half of the twentieth century.

Manufactured in brass, this fired shell case was produced for the QF 2-pounder naval gun, one of the Royal Navy’s principal close-range anti-aircraft weapons during the interwar period and World War II.

The 2-pounder “Pom-Pom” earned its nickname from the distinctive sound produced during rapid fire. Introduced in the early twentieth century and continually improved, it became a standard defensive weapon aboard British warships, serving in single, quadruple, and octuple mountings. The gun provided vital protection against enemy aircraft and was also employed against small surface craft when required.

Weapons firing this ammunition saw extensive service aboard vessels of the Royal Navy throughout the Second World War, including battleships, aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers, corvettes, and merchant vessels equipped for convoy escort duties. The 2-pounder played an important defensive role during major naval operations, including the Battle of the Atlantic, the Mediterranean campaign, the Arctic convoys, and operations in the Pacific.
