British officer mess dress pips, sold as a pair of British Army rank insignia for wear on officers’ mess dress and ceremonial uniforms. Manufactured in gilt wire, these officers’ rank stars—commonly known as “pips”—represent the insignia used to denote commissioned officer rank within the British Army. The design is based upon the Order of the Bath star, a symbol that has appeared on British Army officer rank insignia since the nineteenth century and remains in use today.
