British Royal Navy seaman’s clasp knife, also known as a pocket or jack knife, manufactured by the renowned Joseph Rodgers & Sons of Sheffield, one of the most respected names in British cutlery, and dated 1943. This robust folding knife represents the classic naval pattern issued to sailors for general deck and rigging work throughout the 20th century.

The knife features a single blade, a folding marlinspike, and a steel shackle bail, all housed in sturdy chequered zinc or aluminium grip scales riveted to steel liners. The tang of the main blade is stamped “JOSEPH RODGERS & SONS / 6 NORFOLK ST / SHEFFIELD / ENGLAND”, on one side and “1943” beneath the firm’s star and Maltese cross trademark on the other.

Designed for reliability in harsh maritime conditions, this knife was an essential tool for Royal Navy seamen, combining practical functionality with the quality and precision associated with Rodgers manufacture.

Dimensions

Closed length: approx. 12cm (4.8 in)

Blade length: approx. 6.8cm (3.7 in)

Marlinspike length: approx. 7.8cm (3 in)

Condition
Good. The blade retains a smooth opening and firm spring tension; however, it has been oversharpened. Steel surfaces display a light, even patina consistent with age and naval use. Grips are intact, tight, and free from cracks or damage. Markings are fairly worn, and the top line of the maker’s mark is effectively illegible.
