East Surrey Regiment brass button (1901–1953 pattern), 19mm, original example of British Army regimental uniform insignia associated with the East Surrey Regiment.

Manufactured in brass, this 19mm uniform button bears the distinctive regimental device of the East Surrey Regiment and was worn on a variety of service dress and ceremonial uniforms between 1901 and 1953. Introduced during the reign of Edward VII, this pattern remained in use through the reigns of George V, Edward VIII, and George VI, making it one of the regiment’s longest-serving button designs.

The East Surrey Regiment was formed in 1881 under the Childers Reforms through the amalgamation of the 31st (Huntingdonshire) Regiment of Foot and the 70th (Surrey) Regiment of Foot. Recruiting primarily from eastern Surrey and parts of south London, the regiment developed a distinguished record of service across the British Empire.

During the lifetime of this button pattern, the regiment served with distinction in the Second Boer War, the First World War, and World War II. East Surrey battalions fought on the Western Front, at Gallipoli, in Mesopotamia, North Africa, Italy, Burma, and Northwest Europe, earning numerous battle honours and decorations for gallantry.

In 1959, the East Surrey Regiment amalgamated with the Queen’s Royal Regiment (West Surrey) to form the Queen’s Royal Surrey Regiment, bringing to an end nearly eight decades of independent regimental service. As a result, original buttons of this pattern are increasingly sought after by collectors of British military insignia and Surrey regimental memorabilia.

Manufactured in brass and retaining its original reverse shank fitting, this example represents an authentic and collectable piece of British regimental history.
