Edwardian British Pattern 1897 Infantry Officer’s Sword, manufactured by Wilkinson Sword and accompanied by a Sam Browne leather scabbard. The Pattern 1897 sword was introduced for British Army infantry officers and remained the standard service pattern into the 20th and 21st centuries. It features a straight, single-edged blade with a spear point, a pierced steel guard incorporating the crowned royal cypher (ERVII), and a grip traditionally bound in ray skin with wire binding. The blade is etched with decorative panels, including the initials “N.D.” within the placard section.
Wilkinson Sword was one of Britain’s principal manufacturers of military swords, supplying officers’ swords to established military patterns. This example represents the Edwardian period of British Army officers’ equipment and is of interest to collectors of British military edged weapons, Wilkinson-manufactured swords, and pre-First World War officers’ accoutrements. The accompanying Sam Browne leather scabbard forms part of the set.
