An original Imperial German Seitengewehr 1898/05 sawback pioneer bayonet, manufactured during the First World War and dated 1916. Designed for use with the Mauser Gewehr 98 rifle, this is the scarce sawback variant issued to engineer and pioneer troops. The heavy butcher-style blade is fullered and features the characteristic serrated spine with saw teeth. The steel crossguard features a swept quillon and a muzzle cutout for the barrel, with grooved wooden slab grips secured by rivets to the full tang. The pommel has the standard push-button release catch. The ricasso is stamped with the maker’s mark “Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Sie, Solingen” and dated “16” on the spine, with additional inspection marks present here as well as above the catch on the pommel.
