Punjab Frontier 1897–98 clasp, original example of the campaign bar awarded with the India General Service Medal (1854) for service during the operations on the North-West Frontier of India between 1897 and 1898.

Manufactured in silver, this original “Punjab Frontier 1897–98” clasp was awarded to officers and men of the British and Indian Armies who took part in military operations along the Punjab Frontier during one of the most turbulent periods on the North-West Frontier of British India. The clasp was fitted to the ribbon of the India General Service Medal (1854), denoting participation in a specific campaign and forming part of the long-running series of frontier operations recognised by the medal.

The Punjab Frontier 1897–98 campaign formed part of the wider frontier conflicts that followed widespread tribal uprisings in 1897. British and Indian forces were deployed against hostile tribes along the frontier, conducting numerous expeditions through rugged mountainous terrain to restore order and secure the strategically important frontier between British India and Afghanistan. Operations were characterised by difficult marches, isolated outposts, and fierce fighting under challenging climatic conditions.

The clasp was awarded to personnel serving with numerous British and Indian Army units, including infantry, cavalry, artillery, engineers, and transport services engaged in the frontier expeditions. Many soldiers who earned the Punjab Frontier 1897–98 clasp also qualified for additional clasps for related operations, reflecting the prolonged nature of military service on the North-West Frontier during the late Victorian period.
