This contemporary tailor’s copy faithfully reproduces the front face of the “Laing’s Nek” clasp issued with the Queen’s South Africa Medal. Unlike modern reproductions, these period-made tailor’s copies were manufactured during or shortly after the Edwardian period by military outfitters for wear on uniforms, replacement of damaged clasp components, or completion of privately mounted medal groups. Today, they are recognised by collectors as historic artefacts in their own right, reflecting early twentieth-century military tailoring and medal mounting practices.

The original Laing’s Nek clasp was awarded to officers and men of the British Army and Colonial forces who served in operations in the Laing’s Nek area between 2 June and 9 June 1900, during the Second Boer War. The clasp commemorates the operations that secured this strategically important mountain pass on the border between Natal and the Transvaal.

Following the relief of Ladysmith and the advance into the Transvaal, British forces under General Sir Redvers Buller moved north to force the Boer positions at Laing’s Nek. The successful capture of the pass opened the route into the Transvaal, marking the end of one of the principal defensive positions held by the Boer forces in northern Natal. Although the campaign continued for a further two years, the occupation of Laing’s Nek represented an important strategic success for the British Army.

As this example is the clasp face only, it represents the engraved front plate that would originally have been fitted to the clasp body. Original clasp faces are considerably scarcer than complete clasps, having often been separated during repairs, alterations, or restoration work over many decades. They are particularly sought after by collectors undertaking sympathetic restoration of original Queen’s South Africa Medals or assembling specialist collections of campaign medal components.

The Laing’s Nek clasp is one of the more desirable battle clasps awarded with the Queen’s South Africa Medal, appealing to collectors of Boer War medals, British Army history, and Edwardian military memorabilia. Contemporary tailor’s copy clasp faces provide an excellent insight into period military outfitting and are increasingly appreciated for their historical authenticity.
