Malabar 1921–22 clasp, original example of the campaign bar awarded with the India General Service Medal 1908 for service during the Malabar operations of 1921–1922.

Manufactured in silver, this original “Malabar 1921–22” clasp was awarded to officers and men of the British Army, Indian Army, and associated forces who took part in military operations during the Malabar Rebellion (Moplah Rebellion) of 1921–1922. The clasp was fitted to the ribbon of the India General Service Medal 1908, identifying service during one of the most significant internal security campaigns of British India in the early twentieth century.

The Malabar operations followed the outbreak of widespread unrest in the Malabar region of the Madras Presidency in August 1921. The rebellion, centred largely among the Moplah Muslim population of the region, initially arose from a combination of political, religious, social, and agrarian tensions, including opposition to British rule and local land disputes. The uprising developed into a major armed revolt, requiring the deployment of British and Indian military forces to restore government control.

Troops involved included British Army units, Indian Army regiments, and supporting services who conducted operations against rebel groups across difficult terrain, including the forested and mountainous areas of the Western Ghats. The campaign involved patrols, searches, and engagements with armed insurgents, with forces operating under challenging conditions during a prolonged period of unrest.

The Malabar 1921–22 clasp is one of the later and more distinctive clasps issued with the India General Service Medal 1908 series.
