Manchester Regiment helmet plate centre (1898–c.1914 pattern), an original piece of British Army headdress insignia associated with the Manchester Regiment during the late Victorian, Edwardian, and pre-First World War period.
The badge comprises the central device from the regiment’s Home Service helmet plate and features the regiment’s distinctive City of Manchester emblem in relief, surrounded by the regimental title characteristic of British infantry insignia of the era. The design reflects the formal and highly detailed style of helmet plate insignia worn by line infantry regiments at the turn of the 20th century.
Helmet plate centres of this type were mounted within the larger star-shaped or wreath-backed helmet plates worn on the Home Service helmet, serving as a prominent indication of regimental identity. The pattern remained in use from 1898 until the outbreak of the First World War, after which changing operational requirements led to the decline of such elaborate headdress insignia in active service.
The Manchester Regiment served extensively throughout the British Empire and entered the First World War with a proud regimental heritage dating back to the reforms of the late 19th century. Original helmet plate centres from this period remain highly desirable among collectors of British military insignia due to their quality of manufacture and historical significance.
Manufactured in brass with attachment fittings to the reverse, this example represents a classic piece of pre-1914 British regimental headdress insignia.
